Epigenetics for health
and a long life
with a high quality of life.

I want to communicate insights from university-based epigenetics research clearly and make them accessible to as many people as possible—helping them better understand their health and opening up new perspectives on a long life with a high quality of life. At the same time, I am working to translate these insights into medical applications that support patients and their clinicians.

About me

Prof. PD Dr. rer. nat. Simeon Santourlidis

My first thanks go to Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, my alma mater. It gave me the opportunity to study, conduct research and teach.

Since April 1997, I have conducted research at University Hospital Düsseldorf in the comparatively young field of epigenetics.

I direct the Epigenetics Laboratory for Human Health and Longevity at the Institute of Transplantation Diagnostics and Cell Therapeutics, Faculty of Medicine, Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf.

Epigenetics explained

How do our cells use their genes—and what role does our environment play? Eight questions offer an accessible introduction.

Three perspectives on epigenetics

01 / HEALTHY AGEING

Healthy ageing and quality of life

I want to make insights from epigenetics understandable and accessible to as many people as possible. A deeper understanding of the bridge between our environment and gene regulation can open up new perspectives on health and a long life with a high quality of life.

02 / EVOLUTION

Epigenetics and human evolution

I study how epigenetic regulation and changes in the genome contribute to human evolution. I want to make these connections accessible, because our evolutionary history helps us understand who we are today.

03 / CANCER MEDICINE

Epigenetic biomarkers for cancer medicine

I develop epigenetic biomarkers intended to support patients and clinicians in the early detection and assessment of cancer. This platform technology has the potential to be applied to different cancers and to support ongoing monitoring of individual risk.

My research today

EpihTERT: Detecting cancer cells through their epigenetic traces

I investigate characteristic methylation patterns at the hTERT gene as an epigenetic signal of malignancy. The aim is a broadly applicable platform technology for early detection, prognosis and follow-up.

Knowledge for
as many people as possible

This website is for everyone who wants to understand epigenetics and its significance for life. I also hope to encourage dialogue with scientists, patients, clinical partners and businesses.

Collaboration

I welcome scientific collaborations and dialogue with clinical institutions and industrial partners. I am particularly interested in joint projects involving the clinical validation of epigenetic biomarkers and the development of epigenetic methods. Together, I hope to help translate scientific insights into reliable medical applications.
